Technics Unveils A New Direct-Drive Turntable At A More Affordable Price – Forbes

The new entry-level Technics SL-100C turntable offers classic Technics features at a more affordable … [+] price.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, it can’t have escaped your notice that vinyl records have made an astonishing comeback to rival the raising of Lazarus. Perhaps the most iconic turntable ever made was the Technics SL-1200C that was originally launched in 1972. Now Technics is launching its new entry-level SL-100C direct drive turntable at a competitive price point.
Featuring the classic characteristics of the best Technics turntables, such as the iron-coreless direct-drive motor and high-precision S-shaped aluminum tonearm, the new turntable comes at an even more affordable price than the award-winning sibling, the Technics SL-1500C.
With its direct-drive motor and classic S-shaped tonearm, the new SL-100C provides a more-affordable … [+] way to get that Technics performance.
The SL-1500C has been a huge success with its fully-featured package aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts, including all the core Technics turntable technologies. According to the brand’s European product manager, Frank Balzuweit, the success of the SL-1500C has shown how the company has hit the mark with its popular new range of turntables. Balzuweit claims, “The demand for this high-quality ‘Plug-and-Play’ turntable exceeded our expectations. However, there’s still a strong appetite from the market for a similarly attractive package but at an even more affordable price.
To deliver that more affordable solution without making any significant compromises, the new SL-100C is supplied with an onboard pickup cartridge – an Audio-Technica VM95C – which offers a sonic performance that Technics believes can satisfy the demands of audiophiles on a budget. The conical stylus of the VM95C cartridge offers precise tracking and detailed retrieval from vinyl grooves. The cartridge’s technical characteristics mean it is compatible with most MM (moving magnet) phono stages found on many popular hi-fi amplifiers.
The SL-100C turntable from Technics is fitted with an Audio-Technica VM95C Moving Magnet cartridge … [+] with a conical stylus.
Because it is a ‘real’ Technics turntable, the SL-100C also features the same iron-coreless direct-drive motor found on the more expensive models and it has a motor control that ensures smooth rotational stability. A solid two-layer chassis provides meticulous tracking while isolating the turntable from external vibrations. The S-shaped aluminum tonearm is classic Technics and designed to glean the most subtle nuances from vinyl discs. Better still, there’s an automatic tonearm lift (which can be turned off) that is activated at the end of a record to prevents unnecessary wear on the stylus.
The SL-100C direct drive turntable looks like an attractive solution for vinyl aficionados who want a classic Technics turntable performance at a more affordable price.
Pricing and Availability: The Technics SL-100C turntable will be available in Europe from June 2021 priced at €899 / £799
