Welcoming the SL-1200GR…
Technics has revealed details of the “standard” version its new SL-1200GR turntable, at the CES show in Las Vegas, which follows the SL-1200G that was released last year.
No release date has currently been set, but Technics describe the new SL-1200GR as “inheriting the technology of the SL-1200G, which was developed as a reference direct-drive turntable for the next generation.”
Features of the SL-1200GR include a coreless direct-drive motor for more stable rotation, a high-rigidity and vibration-damping platter and a static-balance universal S-shaped tonearm for high precision sensitivity.
Technics’ return to making high-end, club-standard turntables again was met with much excitement last year — but vinyl-junkies were less excited by the $4,000 price tag.
It meant the SL-1200G turntable cost twice as much as the previous 1210s, and four times as much as the previous 1200, but Technics’ CTO, Tetsuya Itani, explained in February last year why the new turntables are so expensive.
The new Technics SL-1200GR turntable is reported to cost $2,000 (£1,650), according to Gizmodo, which is still twice the cost of the SL-1200G’s predecessor.
Technics also revealed that their reissued line of SL-1200 turntables are not targeted at the DJ community earlier this week (Tuesday 3rd January).
