You don’t get the nickname “King of the Cut” for nothing…
Over the years, Danish DJ and producer Flemming Dalum has built a reputation for being a dab hand at the edit. Italo is his life-long passion: he’s been dedicated to the darker, underground shades of the sound since the 1980s.
His impact on the genre is remarkable: he’s made nine edit packages for Centre Neptune; created mixes for Mothball Records, Bordello A Parigi and Roller Disco Records; and reworked tracks by Klein & M.B.O, Koto, Steel Mind, Mono Band and so many others.
He’s also a longtime affiliate of Red Laser Records, the Italo-indebted Manctalo imprint run by Il Bosco, which he’s contributed a ton of edits and remixes to.
The Manchester label reached the ripe old age of 10 this year and to commemorate the imprint reaching a milestone anniversary, Flemming has whipped up a special mix of his favourite label cuts to take the listener on a journey. In his own words, “the sound of Red Laser will show you the way.”

Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you What does your music sound like?
I’m Flemming Dalum, and I live in Aarhus, Denmark. I’ve been into music and especially italo since 1980. I fancy darker underground stuff. Due to my edits and mixes I got the nickname: “King Of The Cut” many years ago.
Can you draw what you think it sounds like for us (an image from the old internet is acceptable)?
Where was the mix recorded?
In my studio.
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
Well the mix is designed to take the listener on a trip or adventure… a journey into infinite void of space or into your deepest inner self …. the sound of Red Laser will show you the way.
So you can listen in your car during a late night drive on the highway, or in the gym, or partying, or as an escape from your daily life … headphones and a few beers is recommended.
What should we be wearing?
Space suit, life jacket and an open mind
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
Through the mix you will taste and experience immense happiness, goosebumps, zero gravity, powerlessness, abyss of insanity, passion, euphoria, elevated to the next level of human evolution.
If it was an animal what would it be?
Genetically manipulated and enchanced Tyrannosaurus Rex
The mix is in celebration of Red Laser making it a whole 10 years! Can you talk us through some of your favourite tracks in the mix?
In fact I’ve included all my Red Laser favourite tracks!
And while we’re at it… tell us a few of your favourite memories from that 10 year period?
Huge honor to be with the crew from Red Laser and a privilege to be asked to make edits and remixes of essential legendary Italo tracks.
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?
After many many years on two turntables I now embrace and enjoy making mixes in Ableton Live. In here I can really increase creative and even tell a stort/adventure with extra deepness…
What’s your favourite recorded mix of all time?
Flemming Dalum – Italo Breaks
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?
I don’t play back to back…
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
Early 80s: Two Technics SL 1200 MK2 turntables, Ecco-machine, Citronic mixer and cassette tape recorder with manual pause function!
What’s more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
Start track/intro
What were the first and last records you bought?
First buy: Electric Light Orchestra – Discovery (Album) 1979
Last buy: ‘Lectric Workers – “The Garden” (Flemming Dalum remix) on ZYX 2022
One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?
I’m able to mix any record in the world into another…. No problem
Upcoming in the world of Flemming Dalum…
Lots of italo remixes of basically all essential and legendary records in the pipeline.
